The group
stage of qualification for Euro 2016 is over and the make-up of next summer's
tournament is taking shape.
There will be 24 teams competing in the finals. France were assured of a
place as hosts, and a further 19 countries have qualified automatically - 18 by
finishing either first or second in their group and one more as the highest
third-placed finisher (Turkey). There will also be four play-off ties to determine the final four teams
competing in France - and we now know who will be competing in those ties.
Already Qualified:
- France: As Hosts
- Czech Republic: As winners of Group A
- Iceland: As Runners up in Group A. It will be there first Euro Finals.
- Turkey: came 3rd in Group A and were best 3rd placed team
- Belgium: Finished top of Group B
- Wales: Runners up in Group B. It will be there first major tournament since the 1958 world cup
- Spain: Group C Winners
- Slovakia: Group C Runners up
- Germany: Group D winners. Wasn't so straightforward. Lost 2 games to Poland and Ireland
- Poland: Came 2nd in Group D
- England: winners of Group E: First side to qualify - 10 wins from 10 games
- Switzerland: Group E runners-up
- Northern Ireland: Group F winners - making it to their first major tourney in 30 years
- Romania: second placed in Group F - conceded only 2 goals in the qualifying campaign.
- Austria: Group G winners - superb unbeaten qualifiers: nine wins, one draw.
- Russia: Group G Runners up
- Italy: Group H winners
- Croatia: qualified in the final round - leapfrogging Norway to finish second
- Portugal: Group I winners. Lost opener against Albania, then won 7 straight games
- Albania: Group I runners up. Surprise team of the group. Nipped Denmark to 3rd place and reaching a major championship for the first time in their history.
Who else can qualify?
The eight teams finishing third will contest four two-legged play-off ties. They are:

Ukraine (Group C)
Republic of Ireland (Group D)
Slovenia (Group E)
Hungary (Group F)
Sweden (Group G)
Norway (Group H)
Denmark (Group I)
